Half Kasen “frog leaping”

2015年から2016年にかけて、英語連句実験会「RENKU in English」を行った。自分の句を英語にしてみたいという好奇心と、今後日本に中長期的に滞在する外国人に向けて、パーティを開く準備をしたいという目的があった。

まず、国際的に「HAIKU」という文芸が存在する。「HAIKU」と「俳句」には異なる点がふたつある。ひとつはHAIKUは3行詩として解釈されているということ。もうひとつは発音の差である。日本語は基本的に一字一字を発音するが、英語は音節(シラブル)で発音する。Spring、that、catは1音節。Importantは、Im・por・tantであり、3音節からなる語である。

よって、芭蕉の<古池や蛙飛び込む水の音>を直訳すると以下のようになる。

there is an old pond(5)
the frog is jumping in it(7)
sound of the water(5)

連句であればここに「7・7」の脇を付けるわけだが、一句あたりの文字数が多すぎて、連句的なビジュアル(つまり、1人1行ずつ詩を受け持ち、連なっていくという潔さ)は失われ、連句というより連詩になってしまう。そこで我々は、「5・7・5」を「3・5・3」音節以下、「7・7」は「5・5」音節以下、というルールを決めた。また、行を分ける変わりにスラッシュ(/)を使い、一句を1行で表記することにこだわった。

さて、発句である。<古池や蛙飛び込む水の音>英訳は数多ある。例えば以下のようなものである。

ここでそれぞれの英訳を解説するのはやめよう。とにかく我々は

を発句にすると決めた。

「RENKU in English」を行っていく中で、式目の英訳も進めた。転じは「Shift」、付けは「Contact」。自他場は「perspective」、自「Su(Subject)」他「O(Object)」半「B(Both)」場「Sc(Scene)」とした。主語や冠詞をどこまで省くかも議論した。そうして巻き上がった作品のひとつが、今回の「frog leaping」である。(高松霞)
